X-channel swim lures hundreds to town on Labor Day Weekend

12 Aug

What do several hundred people jumping into the Columbia River and trying to swim from Bingen to Hood River have to do with business in the Hood? Plenty. Can you say “hot coffee” and “breakfast” and “gas to get back to Portland?”

OK, we’ve established relevance. Beyond that, you could do it, too. Kerry Cobb, the new marketing coordinator for the Hood River County Chamber, is trying to drum up participation. Tell your friends.

The Labor Day tradition, named in honor of orchardist Roy Webster, draws up to 550 swimmers every year. Barring excessive wind, they all make it — or get fished out of the drink by volunteer canoists.

This year the Columbia River Cross Channel Swim will be held on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 6. Swimmers are asked to arrive by 5:45 a.m. at the Hood River Visitor Center. Sign up beforehand online.

The event is sponsored by The Fruit Company, Best Western Hood River Inn and Providence Hood River Memorial Hospital.
