Lookin’ for local candy? Tap a taste at “it’s OK to fudge!”

14 Feb

Locals who love to shop local have been a bit challenged around the Hood to find hand-made delicioso sweets. Oh, yes, Ambler FitzSimons does a great job with Blissful Brownies, but when you want candy, well, it’s been a bit of a struggle.

Which is why sweet-teeth will be excited to learn about Lisa Marie Nelson’s new gig, “it’s OK to fudge!” No, she hasn’t bailed on real estate, but we all know how that industry is doing. The daughter of Bill Nelson, onetime owner-operator of the Hood River Candy Company, Lisa has sugar in her genes. She wasn’t ready to take over from Dad when he called it quits about a decade ago, but she’s always loved fudge, and Dad never cooked that, so when she pondered a complementary business opportunity, the answer was clear as … fudge.

She’s using the kitchen at the White Buffalo out on Westcliff Drive, selling her three varieties of fudge from there but also taking orders for delivery. Price: $18 a pound, for the original, a peanut butter variant or a Kahlua recipe. Ghirardelli chocolate goes into it. Plus … other things.

“It’s creamier than most, not gritty at all,” Lisa Marie says. “It’s all from scratch.”

Nothing, in other words, jumbled together from a jar or three.

She’s nailed down her domain name and is working on a web site. Meanwhile, when you want it, and you want it bad, call the Buffalo at 541-386-5534.
